What a Burner Is and the Types of Burners

A burner is a device that mixes fuel with air and burns it in a controlled way. Burner types by fuel, power control and design.

A burner is a device in which fuel mixes with air and burns in a controlled flame. Its design determines combustion efficiency, emissions and the stability of the entire heating system.

Burner types by fuel

  • Gas — natural gas or LPG. Clean combustion, simple control.
  • Oil — light or heavy fuel oil. Heavy oil needs to be preheated before atomisation.
  • Dual-fuel — gas and oil in one unit.
  • Special — biogas and other gases of variable composition, alternative fuels (requiring a technical and legal/regulatory assessment).

Burner types by power control

  • One-stage — operate at a single power level, switching on and off.
  • Two-stage — two power levels, fewer start cycles.
  • Modulating — continuously variable power within the working range, the best stability under variable load.

Burner types by design

Monobloc burners have the fan in the same housing as the burner — they are compact and common in boiler rooms. Duoblock burners have the fan separated from the body, which allows for higher power and mounting away from the combustion chamber.

Boiler and process burners

Boiler burners transfer heat to the water or steam in a boiler. Process burners work inside a furnace or in a stream of hot air and are designed for high temperatures. Examples from the manufacturer's range: ECO gas burners and FPB process burners.
